Chef prepping for success

A young participant at our Kununurra after school program used to love joining in the active games, but in her last year of junior school her interest turned towards the kitchen and helping prep the evening meal for the group.

Inspired by her older sister who is a chef, she had been keen to help cook at home, but with a large family to cook for it was hard to make opportunities for her to learn.

Fair Game’s sessions presented the ideal opportunity for her to follow her interest and develop some kitchen skills, while enjoying a yarn with some of the volunteers.  Consistently turning up to the weekly sessions to help with the cooking, she learnt fast.  She couldn’t believe how many vegetables went into Fair Game’s yummy spaghetti bolognese recipe and soon taught it to her Nanna so they could enjoy it at home!

In September, with her interest in cooking still strong, Fair Game’s project officer was able to secure her a place on another afterschool program that teaches cooking so she could continue to develop her skill set.  We love her demonstrating the new skills she has learned and sharing some recipe ideas with the Fair Game crew.

It looks like there will be more than one professional chef in the family!
